Announcing our newest (and cutest) still!

As you may remember, I follow in the footsteps of countless distillers throughout history when I name the beautiful equipment that produces our precious lavender essential oil. The tradition seems to be rooted in ancient spirit-based practices. It was thought that when raw plant material is distilled, its “spirit” is captured, to our benefit and enjoyment. Stills were named for the spirits.

Here at Capay Valley Lavender we name our stills in the spirit of talented, intelligent, and, often, adventurous, women from our nation’s history. In our lavender distillery, Amelia (Earhart, early woman aviator), Billy Jean (King), Clara (Barton, founder of the Red Cross), and Dolly (Parton) work hard each year to distill over 90% of our plant harvest into luscious, fragrant essential oil. We have room for one more in the lineup. Maybe Eleanor, an historical First Lady of intelligence and significant international impact (and also my mother's name)?

This week, in honor of Women’s History Month, we proudly introduce a truly unique new still into the lineup – a “cute little sister”, if you will. On March 31st, Shirley (Temple-Black, former film star and Ambassador to the Czech Republic) will make her debut! This little beauty handles 2 pounds of material at a time, and is powered with a butane burner and a battery-powered pump. She can go anywhere she’s invited! (Pretty exciting, right?)

Speaking of being invited: YOU are invited to watch Shirley in action every open weekend, starting Friday, April 4th! Tour the Farm, enjoy a picnic lunch, and stop at our demonstration table. Shirley will be ready for her close up.
