One of the enduring memories of my time in the Girl Scouts – from childhood through my adult role as a Board Member with several councils – is the song that goes, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.” I loved my time as a Girl Scout! In fact, much of my perspective on life is based on the words recited in the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
All these came to mind last weekend, when friends “old” and new visited the Farm during the 111th Annual Almond Festival. A dear friend brought me some of his heavenly homemade creamed honey; another brought me 3 cute friendship bracelets. Samantha C., a member of our original Team of Teens and now a junior at UC Davis, brought a friend by to show off the farm and distillery. And sweet Makenzie K. came by wearing her Almond Festival Queen Crown! New friends came by to explore our Scent Station and taste our new Capay Valley Olive Oil. Lavender ice cream and our French Blend Olive Oil, sipped “neat”, won the day.
Spending time with these fun Farm friends reminded me of how honored I am to be a FarmHer, youth mentor, community member, and, of course, creator of luscious organic products for body, health and home. I cannot actually count the number of new friends – now “old” – I’ve made since founding Capay Valley Lavender ten years ago. Though online data can show me subscribers and such, the moments that stay with me are the personal ones, shared through email, DMs, farm visits, and more. I completely enjoy your comments on our products, our weekly messages, and, of course, our little farm in Capay. Making new friends is always fun, and keeping “old” ones continues to fill my heart with joy. Their silver and gold make life sparkle!
